Tennis star appears to clutch chest while being ‘out of breath’
Fully vaxxed Georgian tennis star Nikoloz Basilashvili was forced to quit just two games into a match in Australia after finding himself struggling to breathe
RT News 7 Jan 2022 article states:
The world number 22 tennis player has been pictured with his hand appearing to be on his chest before shakily leaving a match with respiratory difficulties.
Australian Open hopeful Nikoloz Basilashvili needed treatment from a doctor during a worrying episode at the Sydney Cup, where he was 4-1 down in the opening set to world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas.
A physio attended to Basilashvili, who seemed startled by the incident and was heard telling his team that “every shot I’m out of breath” before the showdown was abruptly called off.
The disturbing development came less than two weeks before the Georgian star will be hoping to take part in the first Grand Slam of the year when the Australian Open begins in Melbourne.
Colin Fleming, a commentator for Stan Sport, was widely quoted to have described the scene as "very concerning" and added: “If you feel like you can’t take any kind of deep breath at this level and this intensity, that’s an issue.”
Some onlookers called the conclusion to the match "scary", while tennis website OpenCourt claimed Basilashvili may have been recovering from Covid.
"[He] told the trainer he had Covid '10 days ago'," the outlet said on social media.
"Practiced a couple days and felt all right, but says now he's struggling to draw any more than shallow breaths. Got crushed in his first singles, didn't play the second tie, retired today."
Melbourne contender Tsitsipas conceded that he was not able to give an update on Basilashvili.
"I don't really know how is his health," the Greek told Tennis Majors via Tennis World USA. "It's not easy playing when you're not 100 percent. I completely understand his situation."
Tsitsipas faced challenges of his own at a time when many stars are warming up for the first major of the year and encountering additional concerns around Covid restrictions and remaining healthy.
"Sometimes it's a bit too hot," he admitted, having earlier withdrawn from his first singles match through fatigue.
"You could fry an egg on the court, but we are ready for difficult matches and also the excitement."

‘This is very concerning’ – Tennis ace Basilashvili struggles to breathe and treated by doctor before match abandoned

But in his singles match on Wednesday against Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas, play was suddenly halted when Basilashvili was serving at 4-1 down in the first set.
The 29-year-old hit a forehand long to trail 0-30 in the game.
He then walked slowly to his team's bench and tried to take some deep breaths and sip some water as he waited for the physio to come on to court.
The pair had a conversation before another doctor joined as hand gestures suggested he was feeling tightness in his chest.
He was overheard saying: "Every shot I’m out of breath."
Emma Raducanu also had to terminate her magnificent Wimbledon run in a similar fashion last summer.
And the distressing scenes were reminiscent of Sergio Aguero's health worries playing for Barcelona which ultimately led to his retirement from football.
Former British tennis star Colin Fleming said on commentary: “This is concerning, very concerning I would say.
“If you feel like you can’t take any kind of deep breath at this level and this intensity, that’s an issue.”
Basilashvili headed off the court with the medics while Tsitsipas kept warm by rallying with one of his Greek team-mates.
However, when the world No22 returned, the players shook hands and the umpire confirmed the withdrawal.
STEFANOS SUPPORT
It ended a four-match losing singles streak in unusual circumstances for Tsitsipas, who is recovering from elbow surgery.
However, this would not be the ideal preparation for the world No4 on the eve of the Australian Open.
Tsitsipas said: "It's obviously not easy playing when you are not at 100 per cent.
"I completely understand his situation. It's a shame."
Greece won the tie 2-1 with Tsitsipas losing the doubles alongside Michail Pervolarakis 16-14 in an epic match tie-break.
That was the first win Georgia had mustered from nine matches at this year's ATP Cup as they were dispatched 3-0 by Poland and Argentina.

Emma Raducanu tests positive for Covid-19 despite being vaccinated
MSN Sports 13 December 2021 article states:
Emma Raducanu has tested positive for Covid and has been forced to withdraw from the Mubadala Classic exhibition event in Abu Dhabi later this week.
This also threatens to scupper plans for her to be presented with the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award, should she win the public vote next Sunday night.
The US Open champion, who is vaccinated, had already travelled to the Middle East ahead of her scheduled first appearance there on Thursday.

However, she is now subject to a 10-day isolation period, which will take in next Sunday. That would sink any plans to make a satellite presentation to the athlete who is heavily odds on to win SPOTY from the shortlist of six announced on Monday.
'I was very much looking forward to playing in front of the fans here in Abu Dhabi, but unfortunately after testing positive for COVID-19, I will have to postpone until the next opportunity,' said the 19 year-old from Kent, who reportedly has only mild symptoms.
'I'm isolating as per rules and hopefully will be able to get back on court soon.'

Raducanu is in line to emulate record three-times SPOTY winner Andy Murray from the world of tennis.
On two occasions he was training in Miami and was given the trophy via video link.
The US Open champion is due to fly on to Australia after Christmas to prepare for the start of the season there.
